John F Kennedy Internation Airport
The New Terminal 4 at JFK International Airport occupies the site
of the former International Arrivals Building (the IAB, later renamed
Terminal 4). This opened in 1957, before the jet age, handling up
to 6 million passengers a year. The project developer and operator
is JFK International Air Terminal (JFK IAT), a private consortium.
The partners are: Schiphol USA, an affiliate of the highly-acclaimed
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport; LCOR, Inc., a national real estate developer;
and Lehman Brothers, an investment banking firm.
Three main elements in a 1.5-million-sq.-ft. U-shaped layout: A
glass-walled central building and two gate concourses situated so
that passengers have a clear view of their aircraft. The main building
houses check-in counters on the top level, a shopping mall, departure
gates and an Airtrain station below. On the ground level are the
baggage claim and the international arrivals area for U.S. government
formalities. The terminal design allows for non-disruptive addition
of gates and other facilities.
